Practical Information For Mobile Students

About The City Of Gebze

Gebze (ancient names: Dakibyza and Libyssa) is an industrial city in Kocaeli Province, Turkey. Situated 30 miles east of Istanbul on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara, it is the largest district of Kocaeli; Gebze has experienced rapid growth in recent years- from 159,116 in 1990, to 253,487 in 2000. Gebze accounts for 15% of Turkish industrial production.

Location and Transportation

GIT is located on the north-eastern shores of the Sea of Marmara, bordering İstanbul on the west and is only 60 kilometres away from the Bosporus. The present industrial town Gebze in the Province of Kocaeli, has a population of five hundred thousand, with numerous industries and hosts the largest research and development centre in Turkey, TÜBİTAK-MAM, and the Gebze Institute of Technology. The main campus of GIT (Çayırova Campus) is located on the İstanbul-Ankara highway, 10 kilometres away from Gebze city centre towards İstanbul. The campus is settled in a wooded green savannah of 1.385.922 square meters. The Rector’s Office, administrative offices, Library, and classrooms for the entire undergraduate and some of the graduate studies are located in Çayırova Campus. The second campus, Muallimköy, is actively providing graduate studies and has research laboratories in its two main buildings comprising 48,000 square meters of enclosed area. Both campus locations are continuously being developed and expanded in order to meet the needs of increasing student population.

Both Campus locations of GIT are accessible from İstanbul and Kocaeli city centres by the E - 5 and the TEM Highways, via Haydarpaşa - Gebze commuter trains, Harem and Eskihisar Ferries and the connecting commuter minibuses. Both campuses are located very close to Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in the Anatolian side of İstanbul .

Gebze-Harem Minibuses operate between İstanbul and GIT Çayırova Campus. Gebze-İzmit Minibuses operate between İzmit (province centre) and GIT Çayırova Campus. Fares are fixed and usually displayed on the front window of the minibuses. (Both Gebze-Harem and Gebze-İzmit travel fares are about € 2). Taxis can be found within the city and identified with their original yellow colour. They operate using taxi-meters and the fare depends on the length of your journey. They are naturally more expensive than minibuses, but foreign visitors usually find the fares quite reasonable.
