*The
history of the area goes back to about 3000 B.C. According to
mythology, when the children of King Athamas , Phryxus and Hell ,
were sent away by their stepmother , they were mounted on a flying
ram with their mother Nephele, the Goddess of the Cloud. Whilst
flying over the straits, Princess Hell fell off the ram into the
water
giving the foundation for the name Hellespont. (Phryxus flew
to Colchis, where he sacrificed the ram to Zeus and hung its golden
fleece on a tree to be guarded by fierce dragon. Other historical
names that are sure to be familiar are Truva ( Troy ) , Neandria ,
Alexandria Troas , Assos , Chryse Dardanos and Lampsakos. In the
Iliad , Homer immortalized Truva (Troy) in the stories of King Priam
, Hector , Paris, Achilles, and the beautiful Helen , who were from
this city.
